First Look: Johnny Depp In 'Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales'

The state of contemporary blockbusters means that movies are spending more, to make more, it's either a billion dollars or bust. The middle ground at the box office is quickly evaporating, and no studio wants to their big tentpole to be a modest success. Everything has to be an event, and so, that's why we're seeing the first look at "Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" today, even though it's not coming out for two years.

Disney has dropped the first still from the movie that's currently in production, though it has had to pause production as their leading Johnny Depp recovers from an injury. Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning (“Kon-Tiki”) are directing this latest swashbuckling entry in the franchise, with Javier Bardem, Kaya Scodelario, Brenton Thwaites, Golshifteh Farahani, Geoffrey Rush, Kevin R. McNally, and Stephen Graham, along for the ride. Here's the official synopsis:

Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil's Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea...including him.  Captain Jack's only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.

POTC:DMTNT opens on July 7, 2017.
